Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and is symbolised by the Ram. According to some sources (but not all), this originates from the Greek legend in which the Golden Ram rescues a character by the name of Phrixos and carries him away to the land of Colchis. In this respect Aries is the Ram of the legend of Golden Fleece.
In much the same way as Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, Aries is positive in polarity and this makes Aries extrovert in personality and generally outgoing rather than being either with withdrawn or highly sensitive.
Aries is one of the three fire signs, the other fire signs being those of Leo and Sagittarius. Aries ruling planet is Mars, God of War in the mythology of the Greeks.
Being the first sign of the zodiac Aries is generally seen as the sign of new beginnings. Thus Aries is connected with first things such as dawn, springtime and new birth. In the same way as the signs of Leo and Sagittarius, the other two fire signs of the zodiac, Aries is most often understood to have an assertive and outgoing masculine nature.
The sign opposite to Aries is that of Libra. The ‘House of Libra’ is also understood as the ‘House of the Self’ and the ‘House of Libra’ ruling planet is Mars, the god of war in Roman mythology. This warlike flavour is noticed in the Aries personality by the various traits of boldness courage and the desire to win and to be first in almost everything in which Aries chooses to engage.
